Keanu's character is one with two lives: In the first one, he goes by Thomas A. Anderson, works at a computer company (Meta Cortechs), pays his taxes and helps the land-lady take out the garbage. In the other, he goes by the hacker ailias Neo, and has committed just about every computer crime there is a law for. Because he has been contacted by a man named Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and informed of something called the Matrix, the authorities pick him up and tell him "one of these lives has a future and the other does not."
Meanwhile, Morpheus informs him that he is in danger and attempts to get his attention through Trinity, ( Carrie-Ann Moss) a cool chick, who brings him to Morpheus.
He decides to take the red pill and go with the life as Neo in which he is told the entire truth to the question: "what is the matrix?"
At the beginning of the 21st century, humans created AI (Artificial Intellegence): a single collective with the ability to adapt and change. The AI went out of control and the humans attempted to stop them by burning out the sun; the AI main power.
The AI found a way to use another power source: humans. Keeping them in a red goo and liquifying bodies to feed to the living, in a system called the matrix. Humans are grown in fields and most are oblivious of this for their entire lives. They think they are living a good life in 1999. It is more like 2199.
When the matrix was first created there was a man who was able to control it; alter it as he saw fit. He freed some people and they now live near the center of the earth, Zion, where it's still warm. These rebels are the resistance and attempt to find the rebirth of this man. The oracle, who has been around since the beginning of the resistance, has prophetised his return.
Some of the rebels are crew members of several hovercrafts. Morpheus is captain of one of these called the Nebuchadnezzar. Trinity, Cypher, Switch, Mouse, Dozer, Apoc and Tank as the crew. Morpheus believes Neo is this man; referred to as "the one."
Trying to prevent the resistance are sentinals ("squidy") who have one job: "seek and destroy." There are also Agents. Though they are not part of reality, they exsist only in the world created by the matrix and chase after those who know it's egsistance. Three are promenant in the movie, Agent Smith, Agent Jones, and Agent Brown. They hide themselves in the matrix as anyone at all, but must follow a world of rules.
